Designing My First Putz House

I have been fascinated with Putz Houses ever since I found my first vintage ones here. Somewhere, in the stack of crafting to-do ideas, was the desire to create my own unique Putz Houses.

I finally decided to design a Putz Cabin as a gift.
I started with a base cut from the plastic packaging of a Sizzix Alterations stamp and die set. It was sturdy yet light. I cut the house frame from thick cardstock.

I inked the cardstock but later realized that it was unnecessary. I cut the "log" sides from Starbucks cup holders. I used the inside of the corrugated cup holder and sprayed them with Distress Stain.
I used Glossy Accent to glue the corrugated sides to the house then cut the windows with the Windows die. I added a small piece of clear plastic behind the windows and cut a green door. I also cut a roof layer out of sandpaper but later covered it with Texture Paste. Next time I would leave some of the sandpaper roof showing.
I assembled the cabin and used more Glossy Accent to attach it to the base. I die cut four fence pieces from Grunge Paper using the On The Fence die and glued them around the edge of the base leaving an opening for the "walkway". I used white acrylic paint on the fence and sprinkled Clear Distress Glitter while it was still wet.
I brushed Glossy Accent on the "log" sides of the cabin and added glitter. I applied Texture Paste to the roof and a small bit to the windows to look like snow on the sills then sprinkled glitter while it was still wet. The small piece of clear plastic that I added to the windows earlier helped hold the Texture Paste on the sills.
I sprayed a bottlebrush tree with Pine Needle Distress Stain, rolled the bristles in a small amount of Glossy Accents and sprinkled glitter on the tree. I glued the tree to the base and then applied Texture Paste around the base of the tree and on the "ground" around the cabin. I immediately sprinkled glitter to the base.
I found two twigs, cut them to size, glued them to the base and the porch roof, brushed on Glossy Accent and sprinkled glitter. The final piece was the snowman. He is a vintage plastic cupcake pick that I glued to the base and covered in glitter.

This was a fun first Putz Cabin project. This was a gift for a friend but I might make it a yearly tradition to create different Putz Houses for the holidays.

  1. Very cute! My parents had a village when I was a young girl which I loved. I want to relive those memories by making one for myself. I hope you do create more, your cabin is just adorable!

  3. I love this Putz house. What did you use to cut out the house frame cardstock? Was that a specific die?

Thank you. I really enjoy looking at your website. I am also looking forward to your fox die coming back in stock.
